Carmen McGill and Katherine Hite will give a presentation on why memorials matter and how Poughkeepsie must join efforts all over the country and in New York to remember and recognize slavery and its ongoing legacy.

Through the Black History Project Committee (BHPC) of Poughkeepsie, a group of citizens has come together seeking to build a strong constituency in Poughkeepsie toward support for a memorial and historic markers project. The memorial project recognizes that slavery is very much a part of our area’s history, and that the atrocity of human enslavement contributed significantly to the growth and wealth of the Hudson Valley. We believe that memorials can help serve to recognize, mourn, and educate, toward a less racist present and future.
